"There she is!" Fantine nearly screamed with joy. A little ways up the road, the tiny brunette girl dropped her bucket and ran into her mother's waiting arms.
"Maman!" she sobbed. "Oh, Maman, I missed you!"
"Cosette, my Cosette," Fantine whispered again and again. "Jean, this is her. This is Cosette." Cosette looked up in wonder at the bearded man with the graying brown hair. "Cosette, this is Monsieur Valjean. We've just come from the Thénardiers. We're going to be together again, just like before."
"No, Fantine, not like before," Valjean said kindly, but firmly. He bent down so he was eye to eye with the little girl. "Cosette, I've asked your mother if she will allow me to be a part of your family. She has agreed. Will you? Do you want me as a father?"
For a very long time, she did not speak. Then, she reached out from her mother's embrace to grab his hand and smiled.
